The Wonder Of Decimal Numbers!

This week, we have been learning about comparing decimal numbers. We were given a test at the beginning of the week on which decimal number was larger, when we had learnt how to compare them, we compared the decimal numbers we got incorrect. At the end of the week, we did a test again. Here is an example of comparing 2 decimal numbers.

The Possessed Nun

It was midnight when the nun awoke. Slowly, she snuck out, to a broom cupboard, all she could see was a mangled, old chair. As she stared the chair shook and creaked, the nun felt a sharp agony in her head, she keeled back in pain. Seconds later, the nun sat on the chair, and emerged from the cupboard. The air was as cold as snow. In the vast hall two priests chatted, the nun appeared above them. “Bow down to me!” cried the possessed nun. The priests chuckled and used their powers to draw the spirit from the nun.

The Creature In The Carpet

Slowly, Mr Allsbury walked towards the sound that had woken him from his slumber. From beside the bookshelf Mr Allsbury couldn’t see what was making the sound, he could only hear it. “Calm down, Doug. You can do this”, stammered Mr Allsbury. Suddenly, the beautiful, flowered carpet bulged, Mr Allsbury grabbed a chair to smack the creature but before he could, the carpet broke away to reveal a big black spider. The spider quickly crept from the hole in the carpet and began to lumber towards Mr Allsbury, Mr Allsbury shrieked and cowered away from the spider. In less than a minute the spider was at Mr Allsbury’s feet. Was this the end for Mr Allsbury? The air was as cold as a villain’s heart. Scooping up the spider, Mr Allsbury flung it out the window to land on an old woman’s nest of hair.

Quality Response to “The Sweetest Fig”

Today we read the picture book “The Sweetest Fig” by Chris Van Allsburg. We were given questions to answer.

Did Marcel’s dream come true? What was it? What kind of person do you think he will be? How do you think he may treat his dog, Bibot? Why?

From the book, we know that Marcels dream came true because Bibot woke up under his bed and he could only bark. Marcel’s dream was most likely to swap bodies with Bibot.  Based on what we know, Marcel will probably be a nicer person to others but perhaps not so nice to Bibot. I can foretell that Marcel will treat Bibot in the same way as Bibot treated Marcel when he was a dog because he grabs Bibot to take him for a walk.

The Seagulls

It was the year 1920 and the sun was beginning to set. A young woman in a red coat sat on a bench in the city, she was looking disapprovingly at the graffiti on the wall behind her. “I am master of seagulls!” Cried a nameless voice, she looked around her there was no one. Suddenly a figure wearing only black appeared and threw birdseed all over her, as soon as he had appeared he disappeared. Seagulls flocked toward her, they pecked and pecked. She stood up and ran as far away as she could. She never visited that bench again.

The Adventurer and the Dragon

One foggy night, an adventurer awoke to a strange glow. The glow came from a large cave shaped like a skull. The adventurer knew that the cave was said to be haunted. The adventurer was drawn to the cave, he walked in. A tiny purple dragon was sitting in front of him. The adventurer joyfully watched the dragon sit. He heard a chuckle. The adventurer reached out to touch the dragon. “Do not touch me or I will scramble your brain. The adventurer could not stop his hand from touching the dragon. The dragon snarled. The adventurer lurched backwards. The adventurer ran and ran away.

The Deserted Town

There were once three children who lived in an old warehouse on the edge of town. One night they heard whispers. In the morning they went to the square but there was no-one there. The three children went back to the warehouse and uncovered an old, rusty ute. The oldest child climbed into the front seat and started the car. They drove down the road and away from the deserted town. They had driven for hours without seeing a single other car. They saw a huge black shadow looming above them. It swirled and roared above them as they drove toward it. The black shadow disappeared as they drove through it.

The Sweet Kingdom

Despite the name, the Sweet Kingdom wasn’t sweet at all. My mother and I had had a row over who would go to market. I had won. The cupcake troop captured me. The ice-cream king seemed to sit straighter in his throne when he saw me. “What is your name?” boomed the Ice-Cream King.

“My name is Chips“, I replied. The king looked puzzled. I know I should not lie. Mum and I had a plan if we were ever captured by the cupcake troops. Our plan was: never tell them our real name. “I wish I could fly“, I thought. Suddenly I was airborne.
